The contributory Parent Visa is specially designed for those applicants whose 50% or more children are living in Australia than in their home country. They should be sponsored to come and live in Australia by their children who are living in Australia. This visa is meant for those applicants who may be emotionally/ financially dependent on their children who are already established in Australia. Since the age of the parents may vary from middle age to old age, the age requirement for this category is not restricted to any particular age. However, the ‘Balance of family Test’ must be cleared - i.e., the applicant must have an equal or greater number of children living in Australia. The current processing time is generally up to nine months from the application lodgement date. However, this is subject to the yearly quota.
The main requirements for this type of a visa are-
- Sponsorship- The applicant must be sponsored by a sponsorer who is already settled in Australia as a permanent resident or a citizen. The applicant must also be related to the sponsorer as a Parent.
- Assurance of Support- The children of the applicant must assure to the government that they will look after the financial needs of their parent/s. They must have sufficient funds to look after the whole dependent family.
- Health & Character- The applicant/s wishing to join their children abroad must undergo a medical examination taken by a panel of doctors assigned by the Australian Embassy. They should be medically fit to take a transfer to another country and must not pose a threat to Australian people. The character requirements are also substantial, as the applicant has to obtain a character certificate in the form of a police clearance certificate from the place where they were living.
